The aim of the five-week SMART DEVICE course was to educate the elderly in working with a smartphone. The students of Dačice High School acted as lecturers, who thus developed their own skills in conveying information. 

However, the main purpose of the activity was to connect both generations. Kateřina Marková and Ilona Brabencová from Zdravé město Dačice came up with the whole idea in the spring of 2022, the Matěje Mikšíček Library represented by Veronika Kvapilová provided facilities in its modern extension and ensured the promotion of the project, and the teaching team Petra Mašátová and Karel Tobolka created the entire course concept for Dačice Gymnasium. At the beginning of September, the teachers approached eight students from the 2nd year and the 7th year with an offer to try out the role of teachers for a change. During October, eight participants - senior citizens with smartphones - signed up at the library, and it was clear that the course could begin.

And so it began. On Tuesday, November 1, and then for four more Tuesdays in November, we met from two to four in the library, where the students guided the course participants step by step through the micro-world of smartphones. They devoted a lot of time to applications, how to download them to the phone and how to uninstall them, specifically the participants worked with, for example, the Záchranka, Mapy.cz or IDOS applications. They downloaded a QR code reader to their phone, tried out the camera options and photo sharing via WhatsApp, for example. Attention was also paid to fraudulent e-mails, how to detect them and how not to fall for them.

A clear advantage of the course was the small number of its participants, which enabled individual access and support. Each senior had one of their own student assistants who provided them with the necessary help with the phone. This was also related to the intimate atmosphere, which became warmer and more personal with each meeting. And so, at the end, we could state that the purpose of the entire course, which was not only education, but also the mutual connection of generations, was fulfilled.

the essential promotion was directly in the Matěje Mikšíček Library, where librarians provided information directly to seniors; mobile radio, local radio, poster-decoration
